12 Weeks Of Eating Healthy And Exercising And Still Have Not Lost A Single Pound! Why?
Hi there,
I am hoping someone can please help. I am a 5′8, 24 year old female who weights about 170lbs. I am trying desperately to lose about 30-35 pounds so that I can look/feel better and be more confident.
I have been eating healthy, counting calories and have been eating around 1400-1600 calories on average. I work out 3-4 days a week, more if I have the energy. This is what my typical work out schedule is like for a week…
Monday – 30 min of cardio. Combo of the rowing machine, jogging on the treadmill and an elliptical type training machine. About 20 min of abs and about 30 min on the Kinesis machine doing arms and butt.
Tuesday – I do maybe 15 min of cardio to warm up and I do two 45 min spin (RPM – interval) classes in a row.
Wednesday – I do 30-40 min of cardio, 15 min of Power Plate for arms, abs, etc. and I do another 45 min RPM spin class.
Friday or Saturday- I do a 45 min Boot Camp class or a cardio-power plate combo for about the same amount of time.
I do sometimes eat upwards of about 1800-1900 calories if I am feeling drained of energy during the day so I can make it through my workouts. I generally have a major loss of appetite after my workout (probably cause I am so tired after work and the gym) so I force myself to eat atleast a salad and have just bought a low calorie – low fat/carb Whey Protein shake because I know I am not eating enough protein. I am not trying to bulk up but read a lot of reviews from other women on this particular protein shake basically saying that it didn’t add bulk but just toned more.
So I have been working out and eating pretty good for the past 12 weeks and I have not lost a single pound nor have I lost any inches on my body. I am getting pretty frustrated as you can imagine since I am spending 6-8 hours at the gym on a weekly basis. I don’t have any thyroid problems as I have been checked for this several times (my mom has an underactive thyroid and I was having some problems).
What exactly am I doing wrong?

Hey good luck in finding the answers to your concerns, I hope this helps.
Short and Simple. It would be hard for any of us to answer properly since we don’t know all of your physical attributes and capabilities. So instead I’d like to tell you where I found many of my answers.
I had another person directed me there because as they said, unless it’s a simple query such as, should I drink water or not, I’d rather leave it to the experts.
Check out the website below, in fact that’s a link to the post that helped me.
They have many other articles listed there and I’m sure you’ll find the answers to most of your questions.
Good Luck in Your Search
Someone a while ago called me OBESE and i thought ….. what an ugly phrase. I am the perfect weight now it was like a boot up the back side, a wake up call.
Take steps NOW and go to the website below.
Exercising can cause you to gain weight because you gain muscles and they weight more
I don’t know. It sounds like you’re doing everything right. I’ve only been riding a stationery for about 3 weeks for 20-30 mins a day and I’ve lost 8 pounds. Now I eat dinner around 5:30 and don’t eat anything else until around 12 the next day. Maybe you’re eating too late in the day.
Well for starters I can tell you that protein increase is healthy when you are exerting yourself as much as you are, I would aim for about 80-100 grams of protein a day. From what i have read an average female needs about 50grams a day normally.
As for why you are not losing weight, well that could be your metabolism, and running doesn’t mean your metabolic rate will increase. The best thing to do to increase your metabolism is to eat 5-6 smaller meals a day (every 2 hours or so). From there I would say its not about how little calories your eating, but what kind of calories. For instance, 1.5 cups of oatmeal is about 550 calories, these are GOOD calories and benefit you alot more than eating 550 calories from something like white bread or a bagel. I would aim for eating foods that are better for you. Try eating more chicken and fish for meals and stick to whole grain for bread/pasta/rice etc. And like i said 5-6 smaller meals, something as simple as 2 egg whites and oatmeal could be a meal. And still stick to your calorie limit, just change what you are eating. The thyroid issue could be limiting your performance for sure, and I have a friend that has the same, so it might take you longer to lose weight, but I think if you try to follow through with it all, in the end you should start seeing some gains. All the best! Good luck!
Edit:
the two answers above me are also right, added weight training can cause you to gain muscle if you are lifting too heavy, aim for 15-20 reps per set to tone your muscles rather than build. And try not to eat past 6-6:30 pm at night. Everything you eat after that just goes ’straight to the hips’ so to speak
Muscle weighs more the fat tissue.
If you are eating high protein foods like chicken and fish, and more vegetables then you will be reducing fat tissue while adding muscle weight.
Your calorie intake is high unless you are physically burning it off with high impact routines.
If you feel hungry eat more vegetables on those days. Keep at it.
Some people take longer than others to lose weight and see results. It took me 4 &1/2 months. First of all you need to stop doing one thing, counting calories. That is not going to help you or make you feel better. Remember is not how much you eat, it’s what you eat. Eat a yogurt before running so that u can have somthing to burn. Dont starve yourself eating low protein foods. It’s allright to eat other stuff. Remember you need something to burn. Second, instead of 3 big meals a day try going for six small meals. Not only does it help your metabolism but it also helps you from becoming hungry every once in a while. Dont give up.
