Are Machine Circuits Useful?

I’ve just joined Goodlife Fitness with the intention on using their free weights. I’m starting monday, and I’m ready to eat like a small country because I’m intending to bulk up. The gym employee who did my orientation introduced me to a row of 9 machines which work every large muscle group in the body.
If my goal is to get large and not burn fat, would these be effective?
If so, how often should I use them, and should I use all 9?
Thanks.

One Response to “Are Machine Circuits Useful?”

  • James:

No. Machines are ineffective compared to free weights for these reasons:
    - They sit you down and assist your body in moving the weight, making it alot easier and working fewer muscles, defeating the entire purpose of resistance training which is to stress as much as your body as possible to stimulate adaptation. The best exercises are the ones that activate as many muscle groups as possible through a functional range of motion, machines reduce this and therefore reduce the effectiveness of the exercise.
    - They force you to move in a certain way, regardless of the shape of your body. This isn’t good.
    - They don’t allow you to safely handle much weight, you’ll find that your progress on machines will stall very quickly if you’re not doing free weights.
There’s a reason machines feel mentally a hell of alot less challenging than heavy free weight compound lifts. Stick with squats/deadlifts/bench presses etc. They will make you big, not machines.
